There are many causes of toothache, including tooth decay, abscess, infected gums, or a fractured tooth. If you have a toothache, the best approach is to see your dentist. However, if you cannot see a dentist right away, the following natural remedies can help minimize the discomfort while you wait for your dental appointment.

1. Salt Water Rinse

Salt water rinse is a natural disinfectant. It can heal inflammation, clean infections, as well as loosen food particles in your teeth. To make a salt water rinse, mix in 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm or hot water until dissolved. Swish the solution in your mouth for 30 seconds like you would with a mouthwash, and spit it out. Repeat this until you have used up all of the rinse.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

Like the salt water rinse, hydrogen peroxide kills bacteria and helps reduce inflammation. This remedy is best used to heal bleeding gums or toothache caused by an infection. To use this remedy, mix in equal parts 3% hydrogen peroxide and water, and swish the solution in your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Hydrogen peroxide should not be swallowed, thus this is not a good solution for children.

3. Cold Compress

A cold compress helps blood vessels in the area to constrict, reducing swelling and inflammation. This is a good remedy especially if you had trauma to your teeth. You can either use a cold pack or a bag of frozen vegetables and apply it to the side of your face in 10-minute increments.

4. Peppermint Tea Bags

Peppermint contains menthol, which has numbing properties that can be used to cool and numb pain, such as if you are experiencing gum sensitivity. To use this method, hold a wet, slightly warm tea bag against the affected tooth for a few minutes until the pain subsides.

5. Clove Oil

Clove oil contains eugenol, which is a natural antiseptic. Clove oil can thus numb pain and reduce inflammation. Soak a small cotton ball with clove oil and apply it the affected area.

6. Garlic

Garlic has been used for centuries for its medicinal benefits. When crushed, garlic releases allicin, a natural antibacterial agent, which can kill harmful, plaque-causing bacteria and provide pain relief. Chew on a piece of raw garlic or apply crushed, raw garlic to the affected area.

7. Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract contains alcohol, which helps kill germs and numb the area around the affected tooth. Apply vanilla extract onto a cotton ball and hold it against the pained area for a short period of time for temporary pain relief.

Other Natural Remedies

Other natural remedies include ginger, red cayenne pepper, myrrh, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, oregano oil, and other essential oils, thyme, onions, cucumber, turmeric, and aloe vera.

When To See a Dentist

If your toothache persists more than a day or two, see a dentist as it may signify a more serious problem. Although these remedies can make toothache more manageable, only a dentist can address the cause.
